Another year, another version of QuickBooks Desktop!
For some (myself included), this brings excitement. Others dread having to learn the new functionality. Each new version brings new features that previous versions lacked.
New features might be worth the upgrade to one business, but not to another.
Knowing what new features come with an upgrade is the only way to know if it’s worth the expense.
Here are just a few of the new features to help you make your decision:
1. Search the Chart of Accounts
A new search box on the chart of accounts window is a tremendous help if you have a lot of accounts set up. You don’t have to remember the first word of the account. Instead, you can simply search for one of the words in the account and every account that contains that word will now populate.
2. Toggle between cash and accrual with ease
Switch between cash and accrual basis with a single click in the report window. This streamlines the ability to switch back and forth for businesses who report on one basis and file taxes on another.
3. Past Due stamp on invoices
Instead of having to stress the urgency via email to let a customer know that their invoice is past due and risk them not reading the email, the actual invoices can be electronically stamped “PAST DUE”, saving you time and likely getting you paid quicker.
4. Copy/Paste line
Use keyboard shortcuts to copy (Ctrl+Alt+Y) and paste (Ctrl+Alt+V) an entire row (as opposed to just one field in a row) within a transaction that repeats rows of data.
This is a huge time saver that works on invoices, estimates, sales receipts, sales orders, credit memos, purchase orders and timesheets.
These are just a few of the new features that come with all 2018 versions of QuickBooks Desktop. More new features come with the Enterprise and Accountant versions.
Even if the new features don’t seem like they’d be of any use to your business, is that with the release of each new version of QuickBooks Desktop, Intuit discontinues support for its oldest supported applications. This coming year, that older version is 2015. So, if you’re running any version of QuickBooks Desktop 2015 (or older), it’s worth the upgrade just so it continues to be supported.
